När man väljer att studera vidare vid universitet eller högskola så har man rätt till studiemedel för att klara av livet ekonomiskt under tiden man studerar. Studiemedlet består av bidrag och lån. Bidraget, som idag ligger på cirka 2 800 kronor i månaden, vid heltidsstudier, behöver man alltså inte betala tillbaka. Eftersom de flesta inte klarar sig på enbart den summan i månaden väljer majoriteten att dessutom ta lån.
Både bidraget och lånet kommer från CSN och hela summan kommer därför in på ditt konto i en klumpsumma varje månad. Den delen du lånar, som idag ligger på drygt 6 100 kronor i månaden, förutsatt att du studerar heltid, börjar du betala tillbaka ett halvår efter avslutade studier. På så sätt hinner du förhoppningsvis få ett arbete efter utbildningen innan du ska börja betala av ditt studielån.
Studerar du vid högskola, universitet eller folkhögskola har du rätt att få studiebidrag och studielån i upp till 240 veckor. Detta motsvarar en eftergymnasial utbildning på heltid under 6 år. Vet du att du kommer studera längre än 6 år kan du spara veckor under utbildningens gång. Antingen kan du ansöka om studiestöd för färre veckor än du studerar per år, eller så kan du under en period i utbildningen ansöka om studiestöd för studier på 50-75 procent trots att du studerar på 100 procent. Läser du dock inte längre än 6 års heltidsstudier kan du självklart ta fullt studiestöd under hela utbildningen.
Förutom studiebidrag och studielån får du dessutom arbeta extra vid sidan av studierna. Har du fullt studiestöd får du tjäna cirka 70 400 kronor per halvår. Tjänar du mer än så har du inte rätt till ett hundraprocentigt studiestöd och kan då riskera att bli återbetalningsskyldig.
